Benavidez hailed as outstanding student of Bicol 2019

Shaina Mae M. Benavidez, a fourth year student of the Catanduanes State University (CSU) College of Education (CoEd) taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSE) Major in English was chosen among the 2019 Ten Outstanding Students of Bicol (TOSB). She rose from among the 52 contenders around Bicol SUCs.

Dr. Minerva I. Morales, CSU President, expressed appreciations of this year’s feat which immediately followed last year’s student qualifier from CSU in the same search. She said that the award has become a tradition to the CSU’s student leaders and extolled Benavidez to exemplify further the challenges arising from the TOSB selection.

The TOSB has been sponsored annually by the Ako Bikol (AKB) Party List and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). AKB Party List Provincial Coordinator, Mr. Domingo Go Jr. personally handed the trophy, plaque, and cash prize to Benavidez during his courtesy visit at the CSU President’s Office on March 11, 2019. Others who witnessed the awarding rites were Dr. Maria S. Tugano, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Maria Charlene Cantar, Dean, College of Education, and Dr. Nancy D. Magtangob, Director of Student Services.

  Shaina Mae Benavidez is Managing Editor (SY 2018- Present) of the CSU Statesman, the official tertiary student publication of the University, and Editor-in-Chief (SY 2018-present) of Daliwawa, official tertiary student publication of the CSU College of Education. She is also Youth President of Pajo San Isidro Youth Pastoral Forum, Former Campus DJ of Radyo Peryodiko, and Lector-Commentator of the Mary Mother of the Church Parish.

The TOSB search began December 12, 2018, however, the results of the top ten qualifiers were bared March 3, 2019 following series of press interview, essay writing and panel interview. The awarding ceremonies for the top ten students were held February 20, 2019 at La Piazza Hotel, Legazpi City.

Benavidez hails from Pajo San Isidro, Virac, Catanduanes. Her parents are Mr. Severo Benavidez and Lorna M. Benavidez. She is second among the 6 siblings of the Benavidez couples. Asked of her guiding philosophy, she said that “we should not live with people’s expectations. We have to do the things that will make us happy and will help other people.”

The TOSB is in its tenth year now in recognizing exemplary Bicolano students who excel in the fields of scholarship, leadership, and service and showed great contributions in nation building.
